Amigurumi of Among Us Crochet Pattern
Artist Statement
One of the ways for people to communicate with each other is through language, but if there is a language barrier between both parties then communication would be difficult. Visual aids can be used as a common language that both parties are able to understand. I have an interest in tutorials and guides since personally, I use them a lot when playing games and as tools for understanding different subjects. These guides provide information that helps users to plan what to do and how to do any activity. For this project and my interest in guides, I want to ask how abstract and out of the norm can I make the guide about crocheting an Among Us character before it becomes difficult to read. For someone who has difficulty in reading, visual language is an essential tool to be used in the learning process, and one of the best examples used is an instructional guidebook. So the topic of my subject is how guides use teaching methods to help people in learning. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to make a crochet guidebook that is readable through the use of visual language but also stands out from the norms of crochet patterns.
Role
A student that is working on their senior project. This is a self-made project where I focus on creating a plan, researching, designing, testing, and presenting the crochet guidebook.
Research Phase
Research of focus
- How to teach
- Instruction techniques use guidebooks, history of teaching, and how people learn
- Crochet
- History of crochet, terminology, technique and skills, and materials used in crochet
- Bookmaking
- Materials, bindings, and layouts
- Usability testing done by people that did crochet
Weekly schedule for planning and researching.
Process
- Desk research I try to gain as much information on teaching, guides, and crochet to influence my design.
- Practice bookmaking and crocheting to get a better understanding of how I should teach crochet.
- Design phase I focus on visual research and making iterations for the design in order to see how I want the layout to be presented for the guidebook.
- Usability testing to make sure the guide can be used.
I practice crochet for the first time and here are the results
Problem
Challenges throughtout the project
Problems that I notice during the designing and crafting phase
- Printing mistakes
- Crochet is difficult
- Making the instruction from scratch takes lots of time
Problems that I notice during the designing and crafting phase
- Margin issue that was not considered after printing
- Picking the right typeface
- The first design was too wordy
- Design elements were not consistent
- Photos/images quality is not good enough
Old Design Samples
Solution
Gain feedback for the design and do a usability test to make sure the guide can work. Result in a redesign and creating a grid system that will instruct on how to create the amigurumi.
- Retakes photos for better quality in images
- Try different paper size
- Remake the amigurumi for better proportion of the figure

Exhibition
The exhibition at St. Edward's University for graphic designers is called Shift. The name behind Shift is that we graphic designers are facing new changes in our life, one being that this would be our last semester before we go into the working world and the lifestyle changes that had occurred during the pandemic. The aesthetic of Shift is related to a keyboard because the word shift is part of the keyboard’s keycaps.
